There is a great story about Sir Harrison #Birtwistle first bringing Grimethorpe Aria down to the bandroom. When the band finished playing and there was a short silence and a voice piped up "Well Mr Birtwistle, that'll be great when tha' puts the tune in!".
Despite the northern sarcasm the band really grew to love performing it - it is gritty, a bit like the miners who played in the band at the time.

An utter joy to work with the eminent #BenPalmer again. A real rising star in the orchestral world, once acclaimed by #HansZimmer as "a real masterclass in conducting", we always feel so privileged to work with him.

We have particularly enjoyed performing Sir #HarrisonBirtwistle's 'Grimethorpe Aria' today.
Premiered at the 1973 #Proms, this epic piece is seldom played due to its dark mood and fearsome difficulty. The RNCM Festival of Brass was the perfect platform for us to commemorate Birtwistle's legacy.
It was a rare treat for us to perform this significant part of our band's history once more.
