We are the children of the niggers you couldn't lynch!
In lieu of poet's day being during #BlackAugust, we want to highlight another important figure in Black history— Langston Hughes. Read more about Hughes in Anne Donlon and Evelyn Scaramella's work on his poems written during the Spanish Civil War: https://hcommons.org/deposits/item/hc:27041/.

During #BlackAugust it is important to remember the individuals who fought tirelessly to better the lives of Black people. This next #CORESpotlight does just that. Danica Savonick reflects on bell hooks's radical pedagogy and legacy here: https://hcommons.org/deposits/item/hc:43617/.
In our next #BlackAugust spotlight, Julian Chambliss explores the life of Oscar Mack, a man who was lynched in Orlando, FL in 1922. Learn more in Chambliss's presentation: https://hcommons.org/deposits/item/hc:23755/.

August is the anniversary month of two revealing events in Azanian history:
11-16 August 2012 - south african police kill three dozen striking workers at a platinum mine in Marikana, west of Gauteng.
26 august 2020 - south african police murder Nathaniel Julies, a neurodivergent 16 year old, with a shotgun in front of their friends.
both the killings & the popular responses to them brought home the hollowness of white models of liberation. they said apartheid was over & south africa was free; they meant free for the taking. now southern Africa is the region with the highest rates of economic inequality on the planet. This is why we say "A luta continua". #BlackAugust

George Jackson, who #BlackAugust was founded largely in honor of, became—& remained—a revolutionary communist in prison. He famously wrote that fascism was "already here [in the u.s.]" over 50 years ago. He advocated for & hoped to carry out revolutionary guerrilla warfare. & he was not alone
