Born in Nova Scotia, she was the 1st Black Canadian concert singer to achieve international fame.
She performed throughout North America & Europe, including for Queen Elizabeth II.
She also trained Lorne Greene, Robert Goulet & Anne Marie Moss

Today in 1958, Willie O'Ree, the first Black Canadian to play in the NHL, makes his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins.
He played 43 games for the Bruins, recording 14 points.
His pro hockey career lasts until 1978.
In 2018, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Today in 1984, Anne C. Cools becomes the first Black Canadian appointed to the Senate of Canada.
Prior to the Senate, she founded one of the first domestic violence shelters in Canada.
Upon her retirement in 2018, she was the longest serving member of the Senate of Canada.
