On Monday a #BlackCappedChickadee was busily excavating little wood chips from a nest cavity high up in an alder trunk. This morning there was a #DownyWoodpecker pair working away at the same cavity. I think they stole it!

Focus.

This is a black-capped chickadee working of opening a seed of some kind. I can't quite make out the seed. It looks too small to be a sunflower seed but that's what it probably is. But at any rate, the chickadee is completely focused on the task.

"Chickadees love bird feeders, especially ones with sunflower seeds, suet and peanuts. However, more than half of their food throughout the year consists of insects, spiders, caterpillars, larvae and insect eggs. They have even been known to scavenge on dead deer, skunks and fish. Take a close look at this black capped chickadee. Look how it holds a sunflower seed against the branch with its feet while pecking and/or prying with its beak to open it up.

"Black-capped chickadees are named for the “cap” of black feathers that covers the top of the bird's head and extends just below the eyes. Their cheeks and chest are white, their wings are gray with white edges, and their sides are beige. Adult black-capped chickadees are just four to six inches (10 to 15 centimeters) long with a wingspan of six to eight inches (15 to 20 centimeters)." - nwf.org

Black Capped Chickadee.

This little chickadee was dashing in and out of the feeder yesterday. I caught up with it in an oak tree using the limb to break a seed that it made off with.

I'm going in.

This black-capped chickadee was sitting atop that Shepard's hook analyzing the situation on the ground beneath the feeder. The little bird finally decided to go for it.

These tiny songsters with black cap and white cheeks are so cute, curious and quite acrobatic at times. This little #BlackCappedChickadee perched on a small tree branch in winter was aware of me being so close but as they seem to be so trusting, it made no move to fly away until a spot was available at the feeder in #Guelph #Ontario Canada.
