I have intellectually understood what the African diaspora meant/means but today was legit the first time I saw myself within it.

Like...The way he put it. The sixth African nation, dispersed, scattered, but still connected. Like an unwilling prodigal.

I posit there are certain songs that folks in a shared community just know.

Like: put a bunch of Black women together of a certain age and someone starts singing 'Precious Lord' and soon we are ALL singing it and will even adjust our own renditions to create a seamless song together. Or 'Peace be Still.'

(That happened, actually. I went to a lecture at Berkeley about this gospel song mainstay and queer performance, and all the Black folk knew every word. We all sang it together when the lecturer played it. It was one of the most collectively moving experiences I've ever had.)

Also I just scrubbed the entry way, swept the doormat, wiped down the door.
