and then I linked them.

When John Poore's descendants go looking for him, they will find out what great heat great grand pappy did. This is indeed a hobby of mine.

Michelle Obama was the second black woman to be First Lady of the United States. The first black woman to be First Lady was Sally Hemings who was First Lady during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Hemings lived with Jefferson as his concubine during his presidency. They had three children while he was in office: Harriet Hemings (dob. May 1801), James Madison Hemings (dob. January 19, 1805), Thomas Eston Hemings (dob. May 21, 1808).

Because marriages between black and white people were not openly accepted at the time, they never officially married and Jefferson instead asked Dolley Madison to serve as hostess during official events. Legally, Hemings was considered one of Jefferson’s slaves. The exact personal dynamics of their relationship is unknown.

(Note: The term “First Lady” has no official meaning in law and it was not actually used in writing until the mid-19th Century.)

This was a delightful surprise we found - the freedom papers of one of my ancestors. He was taken into Ohio by the Quakers. I circled 3 things - the white family name and the two different names used for him in the same document. Had to research the white family, whom we contacted. And it also explained why we couldn't always find him. His name wasn't always right. He is Henry. Find your people!

I'm always conflicted on the Black History Month issue. We definitely need it and I appreciate all of you who have been carrying water this month to help educate. I hope the family members who weren't exposed to this information are learning something. As for the others, including allies, they always had the power to learn it regardless of whether they used it or not. As always, I'm all about family. 1/3

I don't have much $$, generational wealth built from #EnslavedLabor on #StolenLand having long since petered out, & (likely) no heirs (long story) .

I'm working on finding a way to give my little spot of #LandBack. And just now, it occurred to me to wonder if there's a #BlackGenealogy group operating in VA, the Carolinas, GA, & FL that could use a spot of $? Or a group working on #reparations?

I'm new here, with few followers, & would appreciate a boost.
