My current and up-next reads! Top Row is up next, Bottom row is #AmReading.
Particularly excited to be reading this critical biography of Gloria Richardson, not least because it emphasizes that Gloria Richardson roots her #CivilRights activism in secular humanist theory. Fitzgerald even references Anthony Pinn's work! (Noteworthy: I found this book through a # BlackFriday post, I believe.)

@fulanigirl @billyanders Anthony Pinn has some absolutely fantastic classic works on this: Terror and Triumph: The Nature of Black Religion is a cornerstone work, along with Why, Lord?: Suffering and Evil in Black Theology. Plus his extremely informative Varieties of African American Religious Experience.
Make no mistake, these are as far from defenses of Black Christianity as you get, they are critical analyses within the academic discipline of religion and theology. Pinn himself is an #atheist and develops a strongly Black Humanist theory in his also excellent The End of God-Talk: An African-American Humanist Theology.

Sikivu Hutchinson is one of the most intellectually & relentlessly Black Humanist Feminist thinkers/activists/artists I've ever met. Her intellect is intimidating, in that way of admiration. She has never not razor criticized heteropatriarchal whiteness in the atheist movement, which has then meant that she built the space & time that she saw need for, largely locally in LA, but also through her scholarly and artistic work.

Finished Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language by @gretchenmcc this morning & loved it, esp the "#ThirdSpace" framing. Reminds me of Anthony Pinn's #BlackHumanism work on secular sacred space, using that example of a coffee shop. That connected his discussion of time-space disruption in community, & also resonates with the notion of #AporeticFlow that I take from Monica R Miller (a once protégé who stretches & breaks his work in many ways on her own). #linguistics #bookstodon

This article from Dr. Anthony B Pinn is SO GOOD. "Is It Time to Talk About Reparations?
Humanism Beyond Inclusion"
" [M]aybe we are at a point in our humanist history when we need the challenge and guiding logic of an abolition humanist manifesto offering accountability that goes deeper than a commitment to inclusion expressed through a decontextualized rehearsal of humanist ethical values."

On pressing the humanist movement’s old guard to embrace change
“One of the most important things I’ve learned is when to walk away. And that ain’t easy. You can press the sale so many times, but at some point, you have to be like, You know what? This opportunity cost is not worth it.”

@Sean1966 I mean, sociologically, anthropologically, and psychologically, I don't think "weakness" is even properly how that works. I agree, though, that it is the philosophical weakness of Western thought that continually searches, even scientifically (see #Enlightenment) for #extrahuman sources of affectivity. Here, #SylviaWynter is helpful, as is #SaraAhmed's work on #QueerPhenomonology, and Anthony B Pinn's work on #BlackHumanism.
