On the other hand, one of the most powerful #communication tools in existence is the humble #hashtag. Seriously, perhaps ever invented. It's a big, big deal. #metoo was a hashtag, #blacklivesmater was a hashtag.

Now, ultimately we still need to get in the streets. Black Lives Matter is an organized movement, with roots in the real world with years of work behind it. Just like Rosa Parks didn't sit in that seat out of nowhere, #blacklivesmatter didn't happen out of nowhere. Organizing and activism is real work, and it requires real community building to happen.

What hashtags do is allow us to have a conversation. Interested in #climatejustice? Well, there's a hashtag for it. On Mastodon, you can search for that hashtag and follow it, just like a person (and you should do that!).
