Black Mesa, the Half-Life fan remake, was on sale last week so I got it. For the most part I had a very good time playing it.
I got to Xen, and I was still having a very good time, but..
...it just went on for so long.
So incredibly long.

Eventually I started taking notes about everything I did, and when I was done I did the same for the original HL1 Xen.
Playing through BM Xen took me probably 5-6 hours. The original Xen about 1 hour.

To be 100% clear BM is VERY good!

Continuing with Black Mesa, into Xen now, just finished Gonarch’s Lair.
Xen is lovely.
Looks absolutely gorgeous in every possible way. There is so much fun they’ve done with new mechanics, key-and-lock systems, and chaining them together like a leveldesign playground.
BUT
It is so long though. So incredibly long. Can there be too much of a good thing?
Nothing of what I’ve played so far has been bad in any way, but it just keeps going on and going on and on and on.

One thing I don't think people quite get about the sun belt that #BlackMesa and #HalfLife get right? The prevalence of large, crunchy bugs indoors.

To wit, I just spent several minutes looking for an alarm going off, decided to take a washroom break and found the source of the alarm. It wasn't an alarm, it was a cicada singing the song of its people while sitting on the toilet seat in the washroom.

Today's game is weird for a whole different reason to yesterday's game.

Black Mesa started out as a mod, and then was turned into a full remake of Half-Life with the blessing of Valve.

In one way, it's a replay, but in another, it's a whole new game.

Half-Life was amazing for its time. I played it, and completed it, before Half-Life: Source was released. I bought Half-Life: Source, but it felt like I was just replaying it; I just couldn't connect with it.

Unfortunately, therein lies the problem. While Black Mesa is a remake, and adds some new stuff to the game, I can't connect with it. It's very well made, but it's just not doing anything for me.

If you're a Half-Life fan, Black Mesa might be right up your alley, but for me it's just:
