A moody day in South Wales for #StandingStoneSunday.
This is Carreg Wen Fawr Y Rugos stone row (something of a rarity in this area), up on the limestone hills above Llangynidr, with marvellous views north across the Usk valley to the Black Mountains.
The row consists of a very long, tapering recumbent stone (if upright it would be over 2m tall) and at least 8 other smaller standing stones.
Visited on a drizzly day in May 2010.

Last summer I started on a long held ambition to walk the River Wye/Afon Gwy from Severn to source. After doing 70 miles of the #WyeValleyWalk a combination of train difficulties, worsening weather and finally Covid stopped my progress at Hay on Wye.
Delighted to be back on it today, a short 8 mile section of changeable spring weather and stunningly beautiful scenery between Hay and Boughrood, the Black Mountains an ever present companion.

Another of my very favourite standing stones for #StandingStoneSunday: Maen Llwyd (one of lots of stones with that name) may be the highest standing stone above sea level in Wales, at about 560m OD.
It's wonderfully situated in a natural amphitheatre, surrounded by ridges of the Black Mountains, below the Bronze Age cairn on Pen y Gadair Fawr.
This visit April 2010.

The eastern profile of Y Mynyddoedd Duon (the Black Mountains) in South Wales, on a winter's evening from the Malvern Hills, some 40 miles away. Temperature inversion fills the lower valleys with white mist. Pen-y-Fal (the Sugarloaf) is the lone peak far left, Pen-y-Beacon (Hay Bluff) the prow of the escaprment far right. In between are the summits of Pen Cerrig-Calch, Pen Allt-Mawr, Pen-y-Gadair Fawr and Waun Fach, the highest in the range.
