Overall, 11% of all principal investigators (PIs) with National Institutes of Health funding in 2020 held three or more grants. However, the numbers of these “super-PIs” vary by gender and race and ethnicity. White and Asian men were disproportionately more likely to belong to this elite group, and Black women were least likely.

A while back I started celebrating Black History Month by looking for Black people who share my passion for marine biology. The first few years were rough. Luckily Black scientists and especially Black people in the Marine Science saw the same problem and worked to fix it.

A thread of some of my favorites starting with Dr. Tiara Moore's awesome Black In Marine Science

I wrote some stuff about being a but I wanted to talk about working in science while Black and female separately.

Not going to lie. Sciencing is hard work. Working in science while Black and female is exponentially harder. No one thinks you should be there. You are accused of being an affirmative action hire. Your education and credentials are questioned. You are the only Black in the room or at an entire conference.

"Dr. Percy Lavon Julian was a trailblazing chemist whose discoveries improved and saved countless lives. The grandson of slaves, Julian grew up at a time when African Americans faced extraordinary obstacles. Yet Julian refused to let racism prevent him from becoming one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century, as well as a leader in business and civil rights"
