The eldest and I made some knife blades a couple of weeks back: proper blacksmithing, beating a steel bar into a blade with a tang. We now need to make some handles, we have some fairly substantial bits of hazel, but I'm lazy, so wanted a quicker, smaller option, and think they'd look good with deer antlers. Just looking for some advice on connecting them: do I need to drill them out, or can I just soften them through boiling, or something else? #blacksmith #knifemaking #crafting #antlers

While at a family dinner the other night, eldest child mentioned they didn't have a full size axe (they're nearly 30! Who that age doesn't have an axe?) and has been cutting wood for the bbq with a hatchet.
I of course said I could make them one.
Today, I checked my axe-eye drift against a full size axe, and it is too small (good for hatchets though); so it was off to the stock pile to see what I had to make a new drift.
I settled on some cultivator tine springs. They're about 40mm x 20mm in size, and made of presumably spring steel. Whatever it is, it takes a LOT of effort to forge it. I'm buggered, and I've only got it in a rough shape.

Ok, blacksmithing Mastodon, I have a question! I do not forge & am not interested in starting, but I am really enjoying watching Forged In Fire. I can't help but wonder what you do with the metal from failed blades. I assume you can't make a new blade with it, but can it be recycled/upcycled into something else?

#Forged from 1095 #carbonsteel and tempered to 62 RHC. This chopper has a 7” #blade, and is 2.75” deep at the heel. The handle is made from dyed and resin stabilized spalted maple , with teal and yellow accentuating the wood grain. The blade has been antiqued with a patina that will evolve and age with use.

First attempt at a one piece triskele, a triple spiral symbol popular across neolithic europe, used extensively by the Celts and even the Greeks and Romans.

This particular one was made from a single piece of round bar. Two thirds of the length was split in two lengthwise, while the remaining portion was drawn out to the same length.

Then there was further drawing out of each arm, rounding and finally attempting to make three spirals the same.

Ausschließlich der wirklich überragende #RailGunMax (der Bot des von einer Frau geführten, chinesischen Teams) musste in ein Dreier-Rumble mit zwei anderen Bots obwohl iirc RailGunMax viel besser gespielt hatte in der Season. Sogar der kaum jemals gewinnende #Blacksmith bekam ein 1:1er Match. Das fühlt sich einfach falsch an :/. Als ob sie das Team nicht dabei haben wollten.

Sie hatten ja auch vorher schon ein Match der beiden chinesischen Teams gegeneinander um sicherzustellen, dass höchstens eins der beiden Teams in den top16 landet.
