I wouldn't usually do this but That Works are the YouTube channel that helped start my interest in #blacksmithing and #knifemaking. They got hacked recently and lost a bunch of subscribers, revenue and momentum. They're worth following if you're into that kind of thing.
YouTube is a terrible company and I wish it didn't exist. Alphabet and Google too, and the high switching costs involved in their platforms is precisely why these video makers have to struggle and suffer so hard. However whilst they're stuck there and there isn't the ability for them to find a true alternative, I invite you to support That Works in whatever way you can.

The Viking spear gets a wrought iron core; requiring lots of forge welding!

In my first Tools and Process episode, I talk about heat treating - the most important process when making knives or swords! It's also the most nerve wrecking.

Went up the Sky Iron festival of blacksmithing today and ended up manning a stall and doing demos. Just a little grubby when I got home.
When making knives or swords, a lot of time is spent in front of the grinder which generates a lot of dust which not only spreads around your shop but can also go into your nostrils.
In this video, I start making a dust collector for metal dust which is more challenging than just wood dust. Follow along!

Listen to the sounds of a modern blacksmith shop. Enjoy the visuals and the sonic atmosphere. It's hard to convey the vibe of a blacksmith shop and here is my attempt.

Tacked together a rude cart for the propane forge to ride atop.
A broken plastic cart as a base, then a 2' cube of old picnic bench boards, topped with four foot-square concrete pavers under the "Mr Volcano" hobby forge.
Not nearly as appropriate as a cart made from stuff that can't burn, but I am working with no budget here.
Will use it carefully, out in the open, until we can do better!
New home for the anvil too.
Anvil made from section of railroad track, chained to top of section of composite lumber, with sections of old bike tire underneath to dampen the metal ringing.
I think only an apprentice blacksmith can really appreciate what that 12" mark really represents. #blacksmithing

Ok, blacksmithing Mastodon, I have a question! I do not forge & am not interested in starting, but I am really enjoying watching Forged In Fire. I can't help but wonder what you do with the metal from failed blades. I assume you can't make a new blade with it, but can it be recycled/upcycled into something else?

Before & After photos of some #blacksmithing stuff. I haven't done any lately between the roasting hot temperatures and getting my vision corrected, but my "to do" list hasn't stopped growing! Now pondering a wire spool holder...
Embark on an epic journey to recreate a famous Viking-age Spearhead!
