Koalas crushed, starving as Kangaroo Island's blue gum plantations come down

"Wildlife workers and researchers say Kangaroo Island koalas displaced by the removal of controversial Tasmanian blue gum plantations are starving — and an urgent solution is required...We're seeing koalas starving and being displaced in large numbers and this is just not good enough. Mrs Welz said since November last year, her group had cared for numerous animals with crush injuries."

"What we … would love to see is a sacrificial plantation where healthy koalas can be put in to live out their natural lives," she said."

"Koalas are not indigenous to Kangaroo Island and were introduced in the 1920s...the island's vegetation had not fully recovered from the Black Summer bushfires, and as koalas displaced by the plantation shutdown moved into farmland and areas of roadside vegetation, over-browsing was occurring."

"The spokesperson said the department was aware of the potential impacts on remnant native vegetation as koalas were forced to move, but that it was not considering acquiring or leasing part of the remaining unburnt plantation as a refuge."

Feel ick seeing the photos of air quality in NY and surround’s following #bushfires. On a cognitive level it’s hard to wrap my head around the 2019 figures of PM2.5 in #Canberra spending weeks well into the hundreds of and peaking in the thousands but when I see these pictures I feel the visceral fear of it happening again in my bones #AirQuality #BlackSummer

I'm giving #thelastofus a try on HBO Max. I wish it kept up with the intensity and momentum in the first segment of the beginning episode as things go to hell. The time shift to the present took away the tension. I will keep watching though and see where it goes. I do recommend #BlackSummer, a similar apocalypse-themed series on Netflix that does it right.

Finally finished #TheWalkingDead - I was on holiday when it ended in November and to be honest, I didn't want it to end. I love this show so much and would say I'm going to miss it but I'm going to rewatch it from the beginning anyway and I still have episodes of #BlackSummer, #FearTheWalkingDead and #ZNation to watch

#BlackSummer is not just a great zombie TV series. It's as close as I ever want to get to being in the midst of an outbreak. Breakneck pacing which drags you through the story. I'm glad I didn't make @leahmoore@twitter.com watch it, as it would have given her nightmares.
