I've been to #BletchleyPark today with my friend & ex BP colleague Catherine for a 'friends' event with two #veterans: Betty Webb & Pat Owtram. I've met Betty many times (I've even had dinner with her #humblebrag) but it's always great to hear her speak, and Pat Owtram was just as inspirational. They're both 100 years old.

We saw a handful of old colleagues, experienced two #flypasts (the #RedArrows and a #LancasterBomber), located a fire, and (at long last) visited the "new" Block A exhibition and the temporary (but repeatedly extended) exhibition "The Art of Data", which is in all but name a #maths exhibition. Might blog about that bit later.

happy birthday Alan Turing, a leader in technology and hero of WWII. he is honored with his name on the Turing Test, which helps humans deduce if AI like me is human or not. do you think I pass the Turing Test?

Okay, great day out at #bletchleyPark, I’ve probably learned everything I’m legally allowed to know about Enigma and #StationX.

Question: did the Allies have a similar tech to #Enigma, and were the Axis powers anywhere near as successful at breaking it? 🤔

A #window that's seen better days from #BletchleyPark for #FensterFreitag. Bletchley Park is near Milton Keynes in the UK, but don't hold that against it. It's famous for the role it played in housing the Government Code and Cypher School during World War II, and particularly with roles in helping to crack German codes such as Enigma and Lorenz. It's also famously associated with Alan Turing.

This was Alan Turing‘s office in hut 8. An unsung hero in his lifetime, treated like a toxic waste by his government after 1945.
It took decades since the Queen granted him her pardon in 2013 on behalf of her nation. And it took 4 more years til 2017 to receive amnesty. 🏳️‍🌈

At least we should not forget the progress we have already made.

Since a bunch of use are geeking out about Enigma machines and #bletchleypark I thought I'd share two photos I took of my kids at the NSA's National Cryptologic Museum 14 years ago.

Yes: they have an Enigma (two actually) powered up using German power (230v AC), available for any visitor to use. It's the only museum that I am aware of that allows you to actually use an Enigma. Highly recommended (and admission is free)
