I mean what gypsy wouldn't cringe
At the thought of an introduced creature
That eats every last leaf
Of an oak or maple or apple or birch.

So we were struck by this blight
Which defoliated our trees
Made our yard look like a set
from some apocalypse movie.

Worse was the wedding planned,
my daughter and her wife,
but miracles do happen:

The whispers began as I walked into the room. The sideways glances and whispers made me feel terribly uncomfortable. It was one mistake, one stupid mistake that was now threatening what I'd worked for. I wasn't welcome here, but I had to stand my ground.
I take my seat at the table as the presentation begins.

Jane was there. What was she even doing here? I watched her as she averted my gaze. Her eyes briefly met mine and she paused. I loved her once. Well, at least I thought I did. She still had an aura about her, her dark sultry eyes and hair that draped down past her shoulders were very appealing. As the presentation continues, my mind starts to race.

I should've ignored the message. I shouldn't have even started a conversation. But I longed for an emotional connection that at the time I was not getting. While time with Jane was electric, at times she was cold and distant. She just shut me out, unable to break through her past. I told her I wasn't like the others. That I'd be there for her, but I betrayed her.

Sarah gave me something. Something that I thought I needed. I opened my heart to her when I should've been happy with Jane. I was a pariah. Colleagues at work following the drama through Jane's social media and stoking the flames of dissent. I can't change what I've done, forever a blight on my character.

Time will heal the wounds. But I must take responsibility for the path I've chosen.
