For me personally, I don't need nor want any of that drama related stuff, and I don't feel the users of #AllThingsTech deserve to have that kind of drama put onto them nor the instance itself. It causes too much stress for everyone, including others around the #Fediverse and I hate to say it, but I've got much more important things in life to do than to deal with those types of things.

If you wish to import or use someone else's block list for your instance(s), then that's certainly your decision and your right.

I strongly urge you to still do your research of every instance that is listed in a block list. If you don't, you're going to get yourself, your instance and possibly even your users into possible drama and cause a lot of disagreements as well as a lot of questions from a lot of folks.

I know I've not been a Mastodon instance admin as long as others, but I will tell you this with regards to #AllThingsTech

We will NOT import or use someone else's block list for any reason at all, EVER!

We feel it's best to do your own research, block/suspend/limit how WE feel is correct, based on reports from our users, or others.

Just because another instance defederates or whatever, doesn't mean everyone should or is required to do so.

I've talked a bit about how I think #blocklists are a "when you only have a hammer" solution to a problem and that we can do so much better than them for a lot of use cases. They can have a place, but they are a start, not an end.

But beyond even that we can do _so so much better_ than manually updated blocklists that people seem to expect everyone to absorb via osmosis.

I firmly believe our current situation is a recipe for burnout.

Maybe even support #TSVs with multiple collumns so people get some reasons displayed and/or granular blocking options to be integrated...

Just some idle thoughts about #blocklists: While they're definitely useful to weed out the most undesirable social traffic (harrassment, scraping and such), their centralized nature is a disadvantage in that it reintroduces centralization.

I wonder if there could be something similar to DNS, but that would look up weights assigned to certain servers to figure out whether they're widely blocked or not, and by who, to determine a sort of graph of trust 🤔 Somebody's probably working on that tbh.

shared #blocklists would be an amazing feature for #Threads... the service becomes so much more useable once you start relentlessly blocking/muting meme accounts and brands

I’m not prude, but I have laws to obey and that definitely means a not safe for work tag is not enough for hardcore porn. Looking into some user reports I got, I need to find out there seems to be quite some instances whose whole purpose seems to be to host smut.

What I don't like about #blocklists is their intransparency. Are there any ideas to distribute reasoning behind blocks as well, @oliphant ?
