I have a question and I am hoping someone out there has an answer … If my current server does not block Meta and I redirect my account to a server that does block meta … will my account be protected from meta???

@feditips any good guide for #ActivityPub admins out there who want to learn all about defederation, blocking, silencing, invite-only etc.?
Feels like a canonical resource on ‘Determining your instance’s availability on the fediverse’ is missing and much needed with the advent of #threads and #BlockMeta
Federation happens on a spectrum between complete federation and complete defederation. Admins as well as tenants need to be educated on the impacts of different #fediverse configurations.

The privacy nightmare of the fediverse - an opinion, also related to the #BlockMeta discussion.

If your instance doesn't, you can #BlockMeta your self:
• Go to your account settings, "import and export",
• Export your own blocked domains list, if existing, on your machine. If not, simply create a "blocked_domains.csv" file,
• open this file with a simple text editor, type or add "threads.net" (without quotes), and save,
• go back to your settings, import, choose "list of blocked servers" from the drop-down menu, choose "Overwrite", import your new list,
• Enjoy ! 🙂
@ashleyspencer threads[.]net is confirmed to be #meta instance, since you confirmed your intention to block it.
> "The fact that large platforms are adopting ActivityPub is not only validation of the movement towards decentralized social media, but a path forward for people locked into these platforms to switch to better providers. "
Meta does not care about "validating the movement". How incredibly naive is that. The moment "the movement" is not in their best interest it will be burried and forgotten. For starters they only plan on federating with big instances which is nowhere near "the movement" and promoting decentralization. It's just what email is today. Theoretically decentralized, owned and operated by only a few big players. Planning on spinning you own mail server? Hope you don't plan on sending any emails...
And how naive are you to think it will be easy to switch from threads to something else? Are you forgetting the "extend" of "embrace extend extinguish"? Once users are used to additional features they will *lose* them by switching over, which effectively results in a new kind of lock in. That's the whole point of EEE. As long as they stay competitive on this level they will lead "the market" (if we can call that a market, for them it certainly is a market) They have billions of dollars and thousands of developers. You just can't compete on a UX/features/development battlefield.
> "Which in turn, puts pressure on such platforms to provide better, less exploitative services. This is a clear victory for our cause"
Yes, so clear that the threads data access permissions are the most exploitative since the beginning of time. Already making a huge difference, wow, amazing. Clearly a huge success. Huge. (Read it with the alternative facts tone of your favourite US ex president)
Well anyway, #BlockMeta, don't be fooled by meta apologists, there are still a thousand ways Meta can ruin what we created so far, and no, this is not "a victory" for the fediverse. It's still very much a threat.

So threads will not actually include existing meta users, instagram can choose to register with their accounts, but it's a totally new userbase.
What would even be the benefit of federating with meta? we're purely helping them launch their new shit platform and getting absolutely nothing

"We're committed to building support for ActivityPub, the protocol behind Mastodon, into this app. We weren't able to finish it for launch given a number of complications that come along with a decentralized network, but it's coming.
If you're wondering why this matters, here's a reason: you may one day end up leaving Threads, or, hopefully not, end up de-platformed. If that ever happens, you should be able to take your audience with you to another server. Being open can enable that."
promises are one thing. reality, when FB is involved is something different

Yep, and if that doesn't provide ppl with a good enough reason to leave, then nothing will.

Good Afternoon Peeps,
just wanted to share some more information about Meta and #Project92. My understanding is that their starting point was to be "threads.net"
A fellow Mastodonian shared an article with me this morning that states that they will launch on Thursday but was not clear on which Thursday. I also found out that the launch point will be "threads.instagram.net"

Just made a complete list of all my people here on Mastodon including bots Just in case. I am now going back to check out other instances. Once again just in case.
Good Afternoon my fellow Mastodonians. I have been researching this situation about Meta coming to the Fediverse and found this information I want to share.
This URL is a page about instances that have signed a pact to block any instances owned by Meta and to be honest, there are already quite a few of them. I wanted to share this just in case some of us need to find a new instance.
