This happened early in the morning 😃 They came back with their babies today too. We put a sparrow spooker and Wren guard on the box, which were quickly accepted. Now it feels like the yard is back in balance.

While i was cleaning the #bird poop off the bird feeders today, Dillinger (one of my regular Eastern #Bluebirds), flew into my face.

C'mon, Dillinger, i know flamboyant entrance and exit is your thing, but i am literally 100 times bigger than you, *and* i wear a bright red hoodie all the time.

Why can't you be more like the House Finches? They're sloppy and annoying, but at least they look where they're going.

A bit of a rubbish day, today, but i saw some eastern #bluebirds in the yard, which was nice (sorry, no photo).

Also, i managed to score this 40 year-old #Bach #harpsichord box set on #vinyl, for only $8, and it sounds like it's never been played. I didn't even clean the discs, but no snaps, crackles, or pops.

A net win, i think.

After a summery weekend, we got snow flurries today. The garden is waking up everywhere but things still feel odd because there are no nesting #Bluebirds. I have decided to pull the nest today, since there is no sign of any nesting activity. Interestingly enough, a male and a female BB have showed up. There are still Redbreasted #Nuthatches around, and a couple of #Chickadees are showing interest in my other nestbox. #birds #birdsofMastodon #nature #birdwatching #Ostdrossel #birdphotography

And an update on the #Bluebirds. Somehow things seem a little different this year, and I am not sure what is going on. As it is, no nest has been built. Both are checking the nestbox but nothing else is happening. She is either building / having a nest elsewhere or they are really taking their time this year. I am a bit nervous and I hope they will eventually choose to nest here again. If they didn’t it would be the first time in eight years.

Blue birds aren't actually blue. Red and yellow feathers get their color from actual pigments, called carotenoids, that are in the foods birds eat. Blue is different - no bird species can make blue from pigments. The color blue that we see on a bird is created by the way light waves interact with the feathers and their arrangement of protein molecules, called keratin.

Friday sunny morning has the Western Bluebirds checking out a nest box in the yard. It's an annual race between the Bluebirds and the Oak Titmouse who gets this box first.
