La imagen se extiende desde el mar Mediterráneo hasta el casquete polar sur de la Antártida. Esta es la primera vez que la trayectoria del Apolo permitió fotografiar el casquete polar sur. Obsérvese la abundante nubosidad en el hemisferio sur. Casi toda la costa de África es claramente visible. La Península Arábiga puede verse en el extremo noreste de África. La gran isla frente a la costa africana es Madagascar. El continente asiático está en el horizonte hacia el noreste. La tripulación del Apolo 17 estaba formada por los astronautas Eugene A. Cernan, comandante de la misión; Ronald E. Evans, piloto del módulo de mando; y Harrison H. Schmitt, piloto del módulo lunar.

50 years ago the famous #NASA #BlueMarble photo was taken and changed our perspective on Earth. We ourselves were able to simulate the fully coupled #climate system at the scale of a km in October this year. Now, together with the German Climate Computing Center #DKRZ and NVIDIA #NVIDIAOmniverse, we simulated the iconic photo to celebrate this achievement.
