Thad Jones - Detroit - New York Junction

This was Thad Jones debut for Blue Note back in 1956. I look at that cover and think "this was released yesterday" - Blue Note really had great design chops.

This new mastering and pressing was done by Warren Defever and Third Man, respectively, and it's generally great sounding, flat, centered and quiet, despite the multi-color press, although there's sometimes some overdriven mic'ing (I assume on the tape).

Eric Dolphy is one of those musicians who quietly was at the centre of so much cutting edge #modernjazz at the start of the 1960s - from helping with arrangement on Coltrane's Africa/Brass, to his own standout #BlueNote album Out to Lunch, and his work, as you note here, the Chico Hamilton bands(s);

But for me one of his standout moments of bending the rules but not (quite) breaking them is his amazing version of Monk's 'Round Midnight on George Russel's Ezz-thetics

Another Sunday & I’m #NowSpinning #Indestructible by #ArtBlakey & the Jazz Messengers.

This adds #CurtisFuller bringing Mingus-eque vibes on the trombone, but, imo, #WayneShorter is the star unleashing some killer sax. Plus it has the irrepressible #LeeMorgan who is worth the price of entry alone.

This #record is cut by #KevinGray as part of the #BlueNote Classics series which, in a world of spiraling #vinyl costs, still represents great value.

Bill Evans & Jim Hall - Undercurrent

I can't help but start with the cover - the great photograph "Weeki Wachee Spring" by Toni Frissell. Iconic.

And, of course, this brings together two jazz greats - Bill Evans (piano) and Jim Hall (guitar).

Music's great. Recording is not tip-top. Might be MoFi or the master, but there's quite a lot of dynamic range and it sounds like the tape saturated on occasion. But totally worthwhile regardless.

Lee Morgan - The Cooker

After @AndyT pointed this one out, I thought it would be impossible to get...and it was for a while. But - lucky for me - it was repressed!

Another great Rudy van Gelder recording for Blue Note, and a great set by the incredibly talented, and ridiculously young, Lee Morgan, starting with A Night in Tunesia by his mentor Dizzy Gillespie. (The rest of the band is great too; these are classic recordings for a reason.)
