80 years ago John W. Work III and Alan Lomax made the first recordings of McKinley Morganfield, aka Muddy Water, at the Stovall Plantation. Lomax's misrendered his nickname, published the plural form in the 1941 album debut, "Muddy Waters" stuck. #blueshistory

Vintage newspaper ad for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom". The black bottom was a dance that originated in rural tent shows and for a brief in the mid '20s became a nation-side craze overtaking even the Charleston.

Rainey was clearly keen to demonstrate the dance, as indicated by the lyrics "Ma Rainey's gonna show you her back bottom..."
