Don't know why, but I've started to enjoy physical media again. There's something special about actually owning what you buy.

@ayo I started to do this too! Sadly, #blurays are still expensive. I would also do more digital purchases if you get a straight link to a mp4 or mkv file.

Ripping #blurays then encoding them with #handbrake has been my nightlife for the past few weeks. While not as fun as one would imagine, learning about the NVENC codec has been at the very least interesting. That and understanding #FFmpeg from the command line is pretty beast. It even helped me create my #bot @amityisland which posts every frame of the #JAWS movie franchise in order (shameless plug).

#blurays currently often contain some obfuscation files which should prevent ripping them.

I think it is wrong trying to prevent ripping physical media of any kind. Everyone should be able to create backup copies of their stuff so that they can use it in any way they want.

Yes #piracy is a problem but making blurays rippable still does not make piracy legal.

As usual, great haul from Atomic Records. Grab bag of #LaserDiscs, #BluRays, two #VinylRecords and out of nowhere a complete #BigBox of Baldur's Gate that was hiding in a back corner.

Observation. When backing up #Blurays to my home #server, old #movies that have been re-released create much larger files and take much longer to render than new releases. Movie on the left is over 3 hours long, movie on the right, less than 2 hours but released in 1972. Both were created using the same handbrake profile, primary audio tracks have identical bitrate, and the secondary audio track of the older movie actually has 3 fewer channels than the newer one.

Man, I don't think I ever grasped it before, but ripping #BluRays (namely the OG Star Wars and all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory) has made me realise why people want sooooooooo much network attached storage these days. 27 discs adds up to around a terabyte in this case! Also, although I'd love it to be open-source, #MakeMKV is fantastic!
