I played wingspan for the first time last night with some friends (along with the oceanic expansion). I was pleasantly surprised. I had no idea where I would fall in terms of points until the end of the game. There was about a 10 point spread from first to last, and I can say I won. #boardGames
After a few delays we finally managed to get the 2023 registration opened for the tabletop game convention that I help put on.
If you are in the York PA area in November, please consider joining us. It'll be a good time.

Won 73-58 in my second game of #Everdell. 🙂 The amount of options near the end is a bit overwhelming, but the gameplay and theme are a lot of fun. Just the right amount of complexity for my taste. #BoardGames

My spouse and I have made our selections for a 10x10 in 2023: 10 games that we'll aim to play 10 times each.
Heavier games:
Dungeon Petz: my spouse's favorite game because it involves raising cute animals, but it usually takes 2 or 3 hours to play so it often stays on the shelf.
Imaginarium: a resource-conversion game with psychedelic collage art; neither of us have figured out good strategies for it yet. (1/4)
My spouse @MeeplePhD presents the 10 favorites that she played this past year. (20 minute video)
It's not necessarily games published in 2022, as the list has some older games like #LostRuinsofArnak, #SleepingGods, and #MysticVale, but there are also new ones like #ClankCatacombs and #ArkNova.

WashPost: We’re in a golden age of board games. It might be here to stay.
"Now there’s so many games that are just pleasant and fun and sort of comforting and generate laughter and entertainment around the table, as opposed to just sort of brute competition,” Watch It Played’s [Rodney] Smith said."
ENCYCLOPEDIA, by Eric Dubus and Olivier Melison, arrived last week so @MeeplePhD and I tried it out over the weekend.
You're an Enlightenment-era naturalist, collecting animals and then publishing about them to earn points.
It's basically a set-collection game, though the actions each round are driven by a randomly chosen and rolled bunch of dice. (1/4)

Jason Perez of Shelf Stories looks at the updated, de-colonized game Puerto Rico 1897 that he consulted on. There's updated artwork and new places for additional artwork, and one resource type has been swapped out. I found the series of necessary decisions really interesting to learn about.

On our last day at #PAXUnplugged, we played 2 games.
I vaguely thought LUNA CAPITAL was an economic/financial game, based on the name alone -- but it's a tile-placement game where you score points for your largest block of oxygen generators, sets of three greenhouses, the most meteorites, etc. It's a perfectly fine game, but uses the teeniest icons ever, so I had to peer closely at the tiles to identify their type.
This is also the one single game that I won this weekend! (1/2)

For day 2 of #PAXUnplugged, we settled in with some titles from the game library and then moved on when the free-play area got too crowded for us.
We tried the original, Marvel superhero-themed version of LEGENDARY. We already own the X-Files and Buffy versions of this and once tried the Alien version. This is clearly the earliest version, with none of the mechanics added by the other versions, but it's not a huge difference between versions. (1/3)

This video from my spouse @MeeplePhD discusses a new astrophysics finding about an eventual black hole merger and connects it to the board game WHISTLE STOP. (5 minutes 30 seconds)

Having discovered that it exists, I'm a little sad that https://tabletop.social/explore isn't open for perusal, but searching tabletop.social for users is letting me find some cool people to follow at least.

I read through the rulebook for UNCONSCIOUS MIND on #Kickstarter, and have decided not to back it. It seemed pretty complicated and probably will be difficult for me to teach.
Most commenters are struck by the really nice artwork. That's definitely true: the artists are Vincent Dutrait and Andrew Bosley, who are both excellent. But I'm trying to avoid buying games just because the artwork is good.

#BoardGames I played this weekend:
* Game 3 of the #JurassicPark legacy game. Our 3-played team managed to win this one.
* #MonstersOnBoard
* #AquaGarden
# Echoes: The Cocktail, a fun audio #mystery game.
* Arena: The Contest, a dungeon-crawling game whose rules weren't too complicated compared to something like Gloomhaven.

I bought my 3D printer in order to print miniatures for #Gloomhaven. Its a great little tabletop #RPG to play with friends but the cardboard cut-outs weren't doing it for me on the map.
Shown here are rocks, trees, stumps, logs, and enemy support replacements to allow using a D20 for health.

PIRATE KING is a pirate-y variation on pickup-and-deliver with some Monopoly mechanics, like capturing islands and then fortifying them so that opponents have to pay higher fees when they stop there. It's a little more modern - the game ends when a player reaches 16 or 12 points, not when someone goes bankrupt - but it's still pretty long and slow. Pretty good art for 2006, though. #BoardGames
