Some restaurants in Houston offered rooms, so hotels and restaurants were poorly distinguished in Reconstruction Houston.

In addition to provisioning prepared food and being conveniently located, in some sense, these were familial arrangements. Boarders dined family style, sometimes called "table d'hote," meaning eating the same meals at a common table:

Working people did not have the means to cook and various residential lodging arrangements provided prepared food packaged in a single price packaged as room and board:

Workers usually found work near their boarding house or found a boarding house near their workplace. The streets were muddy, but the walks were short.

I am an independent researcher in Houston, TX studying residential lodging in the mid-19th c. From 1837 through the 1860s (and into part of the 1870s), the principal means of transportation was walking. Residential lodging was a large part of the transportation solution during the walking era.
