So it's been mentioned in a few of my books on ancient tattooing that some cultures would hand-poke but also cut the skin prior to applying ink for a tattoo.

I've also read that some early "naturalists" who wrote about Native peoples in North America misunderstood scratching rituals with tattooing (or conflated the two).

I'm curious if there's anyone on the fediverse with any information on the cutting technique? As far as I'm aware, this is not the same as scarification, which was also practiced in North America but which is referenced as its own separate rite and technique with separate purposes.

The closest thing I've been able to find online so far is a blog post on a French tattoo supply website about scarification and "ink rubbing" which is scarification where the artist adds ink to the wound. This sounds close, but the results are, of course, far from what would have originally been done.

I think I may be reaching in the dark here, but any information would be greatly appreciated!
