I remember the hype about "expert systems", but all they seemed to me was a bunch of glorified if/then/else conditions. I couldn't see the "intelligence" in those.

So Artificial Imitation now is a pretty apt description IMO.

@lardmotel I'm with you in continuing to be reluctant to call any of this "intelligent".

Yeah, sure, I'm willing to concede that neural network-based recognition models and even generation models have come a long long way further than I ever expected early in my tech career. But have a read around all the holes these have: training data biases, non-explainability, and a whole raft of attacks on these models that can add undetectable biases.

Actually after a whole lot of listening… AI is just Artificial Imitation. There’s no intelligence. It’s a pastiche, a gravy of ground up fragments scribbled by a child.
