Children and fools tell truth, they say. So, she decided to approach it like the fool and just set one foot in front of the other, not minding the direction but rather the act of walking.

The street was full of children, sturdy and well bundled, flowing downhill from the neighborhoods toward the school. A cluster of teens on scooters flashed by laughing. Younger kids ran or skipped or stopped for warm cider at the corner shop.

I, old enough to remember when streets were for cars, not kids, let them flow around me, a worn stone in their bonny river, and drank from my own mug of hot, sweet cider.
