Want to know how much of an impact the book 101 Dalmations (and more specifically, Cruella de Vil) has had on my life? Well, as a kid, I didn't like pepper all that much and couldn't handle salt. But, Cruella in the book LOVED pepper, put it on everything (even ice cream!), so I decided to give pepper another shot. Then, I grew to love pepper and was basically addicted to it growing up. All because I modeled my life after a book villain. #Book #Bookstodon #BookDon #Bookadon #Books

What I'm reading tonight:
(Not pictured is "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson because it's an e-book)

Today is a good day to catch up on reading. I am way too far behind. Reading through "Snow Crash" and "Keeper of the Lost Cities: Exile", and in Exile's case, I should have been done with that a month ago. Oops.

I'm reading The Actual Star by Monica Bryne, which covers three storylines thpusands of years apart but all interconnected. It also has one of the most unique visions of adaptation to climate change and a better future that I've read. Enjoying thus far! #Reading #books #bookadon #ScienceFiction #solarpunk

Day 1 of my #bookadvent calendar. The 24 books, I have all read during the past 12 months. All highly recommended. Today's is a football fiction, really funny and a bit of a Billy's Boots feel to it.

Joining the challenge! Tried to pick seven that had a big effect on my life, not necessarily my favorites.
1. Foundation by Isaac Asimov - the first "grown-up" novel I ever read, it always stays with me for its themes of trying to understand history at a grand scale and use that understanding to make a difference.
2. Personal History by Katharine Graham - even more than books by journalists, the memoir by The Washington Post publisher made me believe in the power of the press and transparency. I did not know it at the time, but it helped me understand that life goes on after a loved one's suicide.
3. War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning by Chris Hedges - deepened my instinctual attraction to pacifism and showed me how powerful a cultural critique can be
4. The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton - at the time it was one one of the books that made me want to be a Catholic. I no longer possess that desire but Merton's story is still a model of spiritual seeking.
5. The Expressiveness of the Body by Shigehisa Kuriyama - one of the first books I read in graduate school and still an untouchable ideal of scholarship. A book I recommend to everyone to understand how history of science and medicine can change your perspective.
6. Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf - For me, this book represents all the ways my wife has shaped my life. Like Woolf and all my other favorite novels, she sees people completely and has the type of sadness and compassion that engenders.
7. Parenting Outside the Lines by Meghan Leahy - I felt like this book gave me permission to be a dad and still be myself with all my flaws. And it made me take Buddhism, Taoism, and Zen more seriously as ideas I could actually apply in my life, not just esoteric traditions.
