@TheLordChiefRockaNumberOne It depends on what type of books you prefer already! If you're already a fan of crime novels, then OUT OF SIGHT is my suggestion. If you love Westerns, HOMBRE. If you aren't already super into either genre, you should give KILLSHOT a try!
@daisy LEGENDS & LATTES by Travis Baldree is the first book that comes to mind. Cozy AF, female leads, queerness abounding. I also think CAN'T SPELL TREASON WITHOUT TEA by Rebecca Thorne and NIMONA by ND Stevenson would be great for you!
@apparentlyrolly Oh R, you're a person after my own heart!
So this is a mix of fantasy and sci-fi, but A PSALM FOR THE WILD-BUILT by Becky Chambers is a balm for the soul. And it's a short book, too, perfect for those of us with TBRs that reach to space.
THE RUTHLESS LADY'S GUIDE TO WIZARDRY by C. M. Waggoner has a romantic subplot, but is a cozy (if a little oddball) read.
In a more magical realism direction, we have THE CAT WHO SAVED BOOKS by Sosuke Natsukawa. It's adorable and extremely comforting.
This one isn't fantasy at all, but if I'm reading you correctly, I think you would love THE DAYS OF ANNA MADRIGAL by Armistead Maupin. It's the last book in the series, but it's also one of those series where each book stands alone, so not to fear that you're jumping in at the end.
@coffeentacos If you haven't read ANNIHILATION by Jeff VanderMeer, you absolutely must give it a try. Shorter sci fi horror with a similar suspenseful and compelling writing style to Starling, but it is pretty divisive in the sci fi community because it leans more toward horror.
I also have to recommend IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM, edited by Hank Davis. Lots of short stories by sci fi and fantasy greats, all aimed at bringing that terror.
Books that are larger but I think you would also enjoy: SALVATION DAY by Kali Wallace (cw world-ending viruses) and WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HERE by Lena Nguyen.
