That doesn't shift, crest, crash or fade? Is a life still a story, is a story still alive, if it is stilled and unmoving, if it remains the same?

The central section, A Fine Week, wants to be it, but it feels too late, everyone is known to us, few are jotted in more than perfunctorily and any growth is out of shadow and mist. Preposterous young Theodora could tower over them all - if we saw more of her.

Also, the sense of era seems nebulous. Neither war seems to shadow these three generations, from either direction, even though if we are now in the 30s there should be something.

But I persevere. Needs must.
