Al zijn vader was orkestleider van een bigband, en de jonge Al begon al in 1940 mee te spelen met zijn vader in deze band.
Later zou hij gaan spelen bij trompetist #WillieMitchell zijn band. Hier ontmoet hij #SteveCropper en #DonaldDuckDunn, en ook #BookerTJones, deze haalt hem naar het #Stax label.
Terwijl zal hij ook voor Mitchell blijven spelen.
Bij Stax vormt hij samen met Jones, Duck en Cropper het legendarische

Vanaf nu concentreert Helm zich op solowerk en vormt in 1977 Levon Helm & the RCO All-Stars met vele sterren oa #BookerTJones enz. en brengt een live album uit van het éénmalige concert.
Dit gevolgd door solo album #LevonHelm in 1978.
In 1980 werkt hij mee aan het album #TheLegendOfJesseJames met oa #JohnnyCash.
Vanaf 1980 begint hij te acteren, oa #CoalMinersDaughter met #LorettaLynn
