@lisacordaro At a job I had a long time ago it became a competition among me and two co-workers to see who got the most books as Christmas gifts.

The other two usually won, as they had larger extended families, hence more gift opportunities. But one year I got a trilogy! Three books in one! And a couple more besides.

In the five or so years we all worked together there was never a year when any of us didn't get at least one book.

Starting a new tradition this Christmas Eve with , the Icelandic Yule

Gifts of have been exchanged, new pajamas have been donned and now we’re spending the evening reading.

In Iceland on Christmas Eve, there's a wonderful tradition of giving new books as gifts, then getting cosy and settling down to read them together.

The Jólabókaflóð ('book flood') started in wartime, and continues today.

What better way to start the holiday than by curling up with a good book? ❤️

I'm not a fan of modern capitalist Christmas traditions, but I'm all in favor of Jólabókaflóðið, the book flood release of new books in Iceland right before Christmas, then people give each other books as gifts on Christmas Eve.

Done incredibly well out of this year. Franzen may be a bit of a curmudgeon, but I *love* his writing. Never heard of Tim Winton, but it's a gift from an Aussie mate and it sounds unreal! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clouds

“Book Flood [is] ‘just one manifestation of Icelanders’ admiration and respect for writers and the written word.’ Icelanders have a popular expression, ‘að ganga með bók í maganum,’ which translates to ‘walk with a book in your belly.’”

Should we bring the Icelandic Book Flood to the United States?

Cracking read, with some practical advice about changing our biodiversity bad habits. Mushroom kits and composting are high on my list.

Most utterly excellent. Well done @JuliaGillard and contributors!! Particularly impressed by Jess Hill’s essay on coercive control & why men can’t hack being laughed at. Apart from anything else, my next tattoo has now been decided — not now, not ever.
