My #bookoftheyear in 2022: Litany of The Long Sun by Gene Wolfe. Such a mind blowing story: complex, magical, impossible to put down. Feels more like reading Borges than Sci-Fi. Can’t recommend it enough. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/288132.Litany_of_the_Long_Sun
And #BookOfTheYear number 3 is this beautiful signed book of photos of #CantoneseOpera star Pak Suet-Sin (#白雪仙) mostly with her partner Yam Kim-Fai (#任劍輝). The #photographs are wonderful (and there are lots). The presentation is exquisite. The English title is: ‘How do you know how spring is like this - Pak Suet-Sin Collection Album (Numbered & Signed Edition)’

#BookOfTheYear number 2 is ‘Welcome To St Hell’ by #LewisHancox. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a graphic novel describing what it is like to grow up as a #TransMan. It’s a #NorthernEnglish #WorkingClass perspective too. Honest, vivid & often funny. https://www.lcrpride.co.uk/chat-with-lewis-hancox-author-illustrator-film-maker/ #ftm #trans #graphicnovel #autobiography

#BookOfTheYear is a bit tricky. I’m going to have to cheat and choose three. The first is the anthology ‘Queer’, edited (curated?) by #FrankWynne. I came on this by chance in Plymouth and was stunned. The breadth, depth, imagination of the choices - and it really is the #LGBTQ community, not just white #gay men. I ended up buying copies for friends too. https://www.thepinknews.com/2021/02/12/frank-wynne-queer-lgbtq-writing-from-ancient-times-to-yesterday-anthology/

I don’t know how to pick a favourite for #BookOfTheYear. Can I pick 10 of them instead? 😄
So as the year draws to an end, I've managed to #read 12 more books than last year.
I'm finishing up the year with my longest book 'Carter beats the devil'. (v enjoyable so far).
There will be people who have read loads more than me, there will be people who have read all the Bookers and Costas and popular books and that's grand. But I'm here with 33 and I'm applauding those who've read 1.
My #bookoftheyear is either Common Ground or I Capture the Castle.
