#BooksRead2023 - 014 - “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith
I like this concept more than its execution. Grahame-Smith does well reworking characters to fit the context, especially the supporting cast. Loved the subtle class commentary to boot.
#BooksRead2023 - 013 - “Mrs. Dalloway” by Virginia Woolf
A nice companion piece to Jacob’s Room using characters previously found in The Voyage Out. Considers the social milieu post-WWI London in the same way Jacob’s Room considered the social milieu of pre-WWI London.
#BooksRead2023 - 012 - “Fledgling” by Octavia E. Butler
Butler’s last published novel presents her exploration of the vampire myth, from their ancient origins to their contemporary concerns. Sad to finish this one as it means I have read all of Butler’s works. Recommended!
#BooksRead2023 - 011 - “Brave” by Rose McGowan
McGowan’s empowering memoir that helped expose the world’s worst kept secrets about Hollywood. Will never look at many films the same way again. And may Weinstein burn in the fiery pits of hell, where he may be tortured forever.
#BooksRead2023 - 010 - “Nothing Personal” by James Baldwin
Baldwin’s essay based on Richard Avendon’s images is stripped of the pictures and presented by itself introduced by Imani Perry. Concisely sums up a great deal of Baldwin’s insight, much of which is still relevant today.
#BooksRead2023 - 009 - “Blade Runner: A Movie” by William S. Burroughs
Burroughs wrote a screenplay for a novel called ‘The Bladerunner’ about a near-future world under medical fascism. Scott bought the rights just to use the title ‘Blade Runner’ for the film based on DADOES?
#BooksRead2023 - 008 - “Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates” by Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein
The companion to Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar. Cathcart & Klein explore the philosophy of self, life, and death with the help of jokes. A delight to read!
#BooksRead2023 - 007 - “Book of Sketches” by Jack Kerouac
Published posthumously, this collection of “blues” collects short sketches of people and places between 1952-1957. Mostly roughly constructed drafts without priority or refinement. Quite a few about his racist mom.
#BooksRead2023 - 006 - “Noir” by Christopher Moore
Moore begins a new series of stories in 1947 San Francisco, mostly based off the worst stereotypes of detective pulps and film noir, especially the Chinese characters. Tests the limits of using historicity for cultural humor.
#BooksRead2023 - 005 - “The Tower of the Elephant” by Robert E. Howard
A young Conan attempts to steal a magical pendant and discovers its cosmic origins and a prisoner with elephantine features. Decent story, but poisoned by Howard’s incessant antisemitism.
#BooksRead2023 - 004 - “A Friend of the Earth” by T.C. Boyle
Boyle’s frightening accurate look at 2025 is only off in intensity. Ty Tierwater’s story, told between “present” and “future”, becomes a damning look at the effectiveness of the ecology movement despite its importance.

#BooksRead2023 - 003 - “Kabaddi by Nature” by Vivek Chaudhary
Received this book from my spouse after discovering kabaddi on ESPN+. Chaudhary charts the rise of the Pro Kabaddi League, from ancient times to the rise of modern sports in South Asia. Fascinating!
#BooksRead2023 - 002 - “Ulysses” by James Joyce
Anyone who completes this book should get college credit. Unfinished it twenty years ago. Made it this time after reading Homer, Aristotle, etc. Foundational for many literary movements, but quite dated for social/cultural reasons.
#BooksRead2023 - 001 - “South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation” by Imani Perry
A reflective, insightful look at how the black experience has shaped our country and how our country has shaped black experience here and abroad.
