@bookstodon

Hello you good readers.

I'm in the mood for paranormal fiction.

Over the years I've tried some here and there with mixed results.

I like the idea of supernaturally gifted investigators and detectives, but operating in the real world.

I remember liking the Heather Connelly books.

I also read the Charley Davidson books. I like the investigation part in those books, but the larger story didn't appeal to me.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

Hey , do you know of any secondary world revolving around a traveling circus, carnival, or anything similar? Would be fine if one were prominently featured rather than being the focus but I'm not looking for horror or grimdark.

@Melody_M As an &F author, I've got some opinions about books in the genre!

I am not seeing all the replies, but I know someone recommended On Basilisk Station by . This starts a fabulous space opera series with the main character a young naval officer named . The spin-offs are good, too. Your profile indicates some military background, so you'll appreciate it more. With a name like "Honor," you can bet ethics and principles come up a lot, and how this conflicts with winning or whether your side is good or bad. The subtext highlights the tensions between western cultures in our age, and how modern nations may look the same if you look at their cities—but Germany, the US, UAE, and Saudi Arabia are quite different when you look closer, and so is how they express their might.

For pure fantasy, assuming you're new to the genres, why not find 's Dragon series? The spin-offs are good, if you can't get enough. I like , but her series are retro and may be harder to find than Anne's, with some not in print.

For and books you can buy now, I cannot recommend Mercy Thompson series enough. , , and coming out to modern society (mostly) and in a way that feels visceral and real. Romance, adventure, and coming of age.

As a grad, I'd like to recommend two of my cohort to you, not just because I now them, but they're stories are amazing—and they are great human beings.

James S.A. Corey (1/2 a pen name for ). The series is hardcore SF at its best. Peak at Daniel's fantasy book, too! Look for the third name he publishes under, and you'll find great, snarky, urban fantasy. References to , anyone?

writes urban fantasy, but with the background of a former police officer (I think she made detective). Start with My Life as a White Trash Zombie for a coroner. Maybe a conflict of interest there? Start with Mark of the Demon for a summoner who's also a detective, with, again, some conflicts of interest. Adventure, mystery, and romance, too.

If someone asks nicely, I may recommend my book.

Hey , I need suggestions for or to read. Old or new, what are some good ones? Bonus points for series with 3 or more books.

“Bourdain brought the eyes and heart of an enthusiast everywhere he went, and he maintained a deep well of empathy for people who, like him, found it hard to reconcile what they loved about the world with what they didn’t.”

Ben Rhodes reviews the latest Bourdain bio by Charles Leerhsen.

I’m in the mood for a good sci-fi book. Don’t think I have had an enjoyable read since the Three Body Problem series

Large boy (almost 11) has read all three Hunger Games books in 10 days. That didn't keep him quiet for long! Help! He had a reading age of 15, has read everything at school and is devouring the library. Trying to encourage Philip Pulman but anything suggested by parents is usually an immediate no.

Suggestions for something non-obvious please!

Fellow fantasy nerds! Abercrombie is on hiatus and Sanderson is years away from the next WOR installment. I've just finished the Expanse, read Shadow of the Gods and its sequel, Age of Myth series and finished Gentlemen Bastards. What next? Ideally something I don't need to wait for.

I’ll need to start a new audiobook while I’m cooking tonight, it’s going to be hard to move on from the lovely book I just finished and get into something new. Next in my library is Act of Oblivion by Robert Harris, my mother was glued to the print copy when she last came to visit a couple of months ago and we usually enjoy the same type of so hopefully I’ll enjoy it

7 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Books with Little to No Romantic Subplot

I’ve made no secret about my disdain for romantic subplots, especially on this column.

I’ve also recently come out as aroace (aromantic asexual) to the shock of absolutely nobody, and wanted to do a post commemorating that.

However, the amount of aroace cha

The Circus is in Town!

Happy Thursday, everyone! In case you haven't heard, LSQ is now open for submissions! Our theme this year is the circus, so we put together a little reading list to help get those creative juices flowing. Get them from a Black-owned bookstore, find an independent bookstore in your neighborhood, or see if your local library has them available in digital format!
