Not going to blog about it because there's been plenty written about it already, for centuries, but very much enjoying, at last, CANDIDE, for #FebruaryFromTheFrench I've got the free audio edition narrated by Jack Davenport, whom I still think of as Steve from Coupling, so imagining that hapless doofus as this other hapless doofus is an added comic dimension for the satire, or something. #Booktotodon

My sophomore foray into #FebruaryFromTheFrench brought me back into the aging punk-infested Paris and Nancy of the great Virginie Despentes. Bye Bye Blondie kicked my ass in the best way.

Getting an early start on #FebruaryFromTheFrench with BYE BYE BLONDIE and my demented adoration of Virginie Despentes continues unabated. #Booktotodon

One more for #JanuaryInJapan and it's a stylish crime thriller about a pickpocket in over his head called The Thief by Fuminori Nakamura!

Next up, even though I only got one vote on my poll, I'm not Lonny Emeralds so it will be #FebruaryFromTheFrench
#januaryinjapan #booktotodon #februaryfromthefrench
Although there was only one vote and it was the one I have the least books in the TBR for, I am no Lonny Emeralds so I'm going to abide and next month is hung to be #FebruaryInFrance I might sneak in some works translated from the French that are actually from other nationalities though, like a novel I've got that's set in the Republic of the Congo. Anyone want to join me? #Booktotodon

This is either the last or penultimate entry for #JanuaryInJapan, depending how the weekend goes, but if it's the last I ended on a winner. The Emissary by Yoko Tawada has quite a sad premise but is still a charming read because of the author's and translator Margaret Mitsutani's unique approach to language and how it changes over time. Don't miss it!

One more for #JanuaryInJapan, it's the exquisite little time travel-ish gem, Toshikazu Kawaguchi's BEFORE THE COFFEE GETS COLD!

New on zee blog -- David Liss' THE PECULIARITIES is not to be missed! Especially for fans of Tim Powers and The Anubis Gates. Do not snooze on this one!!!! #Booktotodon

Next up for #JanuaryInJapan is Soseki Natsume's I AM A CAT. I am expecting lots! #Booktotodon
Also, in my ongoing effort to actually read more of the books I greedily acquire from bundles, I'm eyeball-deep in David Liss' The Peculiarities. I've always liked his regular historical fiction like The Coffee Trader, so I'm not surprised his stuff is even better when it gets weird. #Booktotodon
Continuing #JanuaryInJapan I finally read Haruki Murukami's A Wild Sheep Chase, which is excellent and weird, but I cannot recommend the audio edition.

#JanuaryInJapan continues with one of the few Haruki Murakami novels I haven't read. It's time for A Wild Sheep Chase! This narrator, Rupert Degas, really sounds like he wants to do noir, but it's working so far. #Booktotodon
My latest read for #JanuaryInJapan is Fuminori Nakamura's exquisite The Thief, but it's on dead tree, forcing me to read slowly (I can only physically handle/turn pages in print books for 15-20 minute stretches due to medical issues). So I might not be finished with it before January ends! #Booktotodon
Joining the #JanuaryInJapan fun, I devoured Sayaka Murata's CONVENIENCE STORE WOMAN and loved it! http://kateofmind.blogspot.com/2023/01/sayaka-muratas-convenience-store-woman.html?m=1

Ein Must read.
Eine Biografie zum kennenlernen der Person Fritz Bauer, seiner Einflüsse, seiner Überzeugungen, seines Wirkens.
My friend Rachel Cordasco, who literally wrote the book on speculative fiction in translation, posted her stats on books she read in translation this year and it made me wonder about my own!
Of the 201 books & comics ) I read this year, 52 of them were translated into English from:
Portuguese 11 (all comics by Léo)
Japanese 1
Spanish 6
French 3 prose 22 comics

I downloaded an #Audiobook I didn't intend to earlier this week and that's my excuse this go-around for re-reading all of #DorothyDunnett. I mean, once you hear Samuel Gillies say "Lymond is back" what else can you do? #Booktotodon

Haven't been on the 'Don much lately because of IRL stuff but here's a bit for #Booktotodon on the audio edition of Chuck Wendig's excellent WAYWARD http://kateofmind.blogspot.com/2022/12/chuck-wendigs-wayward-narr-by-dominic.html?m=1
