I have a strong premise, a detailed outline, and 70 pages of notes. At what point do I pitch this as a book?

I have polished blog posts for scattered subsections, but I don't have well-formed writing for the most important, foundational chapter of the book. I think I need that.

At what point does someone club me on the head and explain how I'm wildly overestimating or underestimating my current state?

But reading my manuscript on my e-reader today is wild. It looks like a book. It doesn’t completely suck. It’s obvious to me what’s missing and what needs to be cut structurally but because I can’t make line edits I’m not bothering with typos / etc.

I’m in reader brain, and even I think this author has something interesting to say, and this book has potential.

(This is the first time in 2 years and 3 rewrites I’ve been able to see it that way.)

If you’re mired in the book writing process and considering giving up, consider:

Exporting your manuscript into an e-reader format, and putting it on a device other than your computer to read / review.

Reading on the computer is too close to writing and all I see is the book’s problems and my anxiety about what’s not written yet (creator brain)

Printing to paper puts my mind in a copyediting state and I can’t see the big picture (critical brain)

I'm nearly 3/4 done with rewrite number three of my first non-fiction book. I'm a year late on delivering the beta read, and I'm terrified to actually sit with anyone (but I'm going to, December 1st).

It is so hard to share something that's not good yet with other people, knowing that it's not going to get better sitting on my computer.

That books get finished is a freaking miracle. Writers, my hat is off to you.

And for those who are interested, here is the summary of my novels, The Epitaph series:

The lands of our world are littered with large decaying structures whose origins have remained a mystery to mankind; they are simply known as The Epitaphs.  Ancient stories woven through time from forgotten lips tell tales that the Epitaphs were sources of holy and insurmountable power.  While other tales described them to be harbingers of the world’s destruction.  It was these feelings which triggered and fueled The Epitaph Wars so many years ago.  And while the memory of the war has been nearly forgotten by the people, its lasting effects – the awaking of fantastical creatures, the unexplainable changes to the earth, and the special Gifts and materials imbued unto the surviving people are its harrowing legacy.

Now the changed world is thundering towards the imminent industrial revolution, funded by the research and extraction of the Epitaph and their precious resources.  Since The Epitaph Wars, the world has also separated into 10 nations, consisting of 9 Houses and a separatist state.  Each House, who’s honored members have been blessed with unique abilities as Gifts of the Epitaphs; have vastly different feelings on the husks of the these triumphant structures that are scattered throughout the world.  With each House vying for power and knowledge of the secrets buried within the Epitaphs, the winds of war are howling yet again.

In the midst of all of this, a young woman from The House of Water, who herself has never stepped foot on solid land; uncovers a secret about the origin and workings of the Epitaphs that will forever change the course of the world and everyone inside it.  With this discovery, she must leave everything she has ever known to travel the world to meet with the Houses and the remaining Epitaphs so that her discovery can be pieced together.  However not every House wants the secret of the Epitaphs to be known and will stop at nothing to silence her and prevent the mysteries of the world from unraveling.
