William Hope Hodgson and his The Night Stand first published in 1912 belongs to my favourite (besides grim dark like Dark Souls) genre dying Earth. It’s a horror/fantasy novel.

And I still have to read newly bought Stanislaw Lem’s novels and Stephen King’s Fairy Tale.

Il y a quelques jours, j'ai fini le superbe "J'ai quinze ans et je ne veux pas mourir" de Christine Arnothy, ou Irène Kovach de Szendrö, suivi de "Il n'est pas si facile de vivre", sa suite directe, après son départ de son pays de naissance.

Christine nous parle de la Hongrie soudainement occupée. Des voisins et voisines bigarrées, de vaines mesquineries, de la poussière du sous-sol où elle se cache, de la farine qui est en fait du plâtre. De rencontres, de peurs, de bombardements, mais aussi, d'une manière très innocente, de préoccupations adolescentes.

Dans la cave, en cavale, dans les rues en ruine, Christine nous parle de solitude, de traits peu remarquables, de rêve d'émancipation, de désir d'enfant.
Elle nous parle peu de politique, et l'on découvre un pan de la guerre qui nous est presque inconnu, loin des cartes, loin des technicités de l'armement, loin des négociations, dans le quotidien, tantôt poussif, tantôt effréné, d'une jeune femme qui oscille entre la résignation et l'espoir et qui nous livre les secrets d'un cœur cachant encore une candeur précieuse.

Et alors, au travers de ces deux livres, pour moi rassemblés en une seule édition sobre, on suit Christine qui grandit jusqu'à ses vingt-deux ans et sa grossesse, son histoire d'amour vacillante, son rêve de devenir autrice, les déceptions et les lueurs d'espérance qui la guident.

Difficile de lâcher ce livre tant on veut savoir ce que vit Christine dans les pages suivantes, elle qui raconte pourtant avec un détachement étonnamment factuel et avec une prose impeccable les obstacles qui se sont présentés à elle.

En effet, le style est quelque chose que l'on retient de ce livre. Un verbe manié à la perfection avec une narration imagée qui parlera à toutes et à tous, sans s'étendre en énumérations ou en descriptions, tout en restant toujours d'une élégance remarquable.

Un livre que je recommande chaudement à quiconque apprécie les "tranches de vie", les récits de guerre, les expériences féminines, et les émotions à chaque page tournée.

Maintenant, j'ai terriblement hâte de lire "Wanda".
