#PrinceFriday today is about #bootlegs! #Prince was one of the most bootlegged artists ever. The most famous of them was The Black Album. An unreleased album, that followed the Sign '☮️' The Times double album. The plan was to release it in December 1987, but Prince cancelled the release and gave the order to destroy all copies. But some of those were already distributed, so in a few months it became probably the most bootlegged album ever (well you never know exactly).

There is a lot to say about the album, the reason for cancellation, the fact he still played songs from it on the 1988 LoveSexy Tour, that it had a (limited) release in 1994 after all and that it's the only officially released Prince album not on streaming platforms.

Fortunately there are enough places where the album can be found, incl. YouTube (for your convenience).

I used to belong to several #music-sharing torrent communities.

We never shared official releases, only unreleased music, in part to help curb the activities of unscrupulous bootleggers who charge crazy money for inferior material. Sometimes it was even done with help from the artists themselves. We often put in our own time/money.

The heyday was 2005-2012ish

I just checked one of the sites and one of my torrents/uploads is still active and has been since 2007! 15 years!
