Wondering why the @borgbackup upgrade instructions say you have to run a command on *every client*. Can't we just delete any local cache created by the client? Or is it just considered more efficient to run that command than delete the cache?

J'avais un NAS bricolé à partir d'un vieil ordi, mais il était (un peu) bruyant, et la partie sauvegarde était tombée en panne.
Je suis tombé sur un micro-ordi MeLE Quieter2 très basse conso (~6w en idle) et fanless : l'occasion a fait le larron, la seule contrainte est qu'il n'y a qu'un emplacement disque, en Nvme, donc si on a beaucoup de données ça revient cher, dans mon cas 2Go suffisent.

Vielen Dank für die ganzen Tipps, die Würfel sind gefallen. Es gibt jetzt zwei Tools für unterschiedliche Aspekte, wobei der zweite gar nicht so direkt geplant war. 😂
- lokale Datensicherung (= home folder): #borg (#borgbackup) mit #vorta als GUI, insb. wegen Fotos und sonstigen Dateien
- Sytemwiederherstellung: #timeshift, auf einer zweiten, kleineren HDD.

Übrigens keins von beiden beim Runterfahren, sondern einfach täglich. 😉

Lokaler #podman server läuft jetzt auch. Backups sind eingerichtet und #borgbackup Richtung cloud geht auch.
Als nächstes kann ich die #docker services umziehen.

@utopify_org @billgoats As for the how, I tend to make an encrypted backup of keys and small datasets on optical media every on in a while.

Much more frequently, I backup my various datasets with #borgbackup onto HDDs, make a snapshot, check them for faults (both at the filesystem-level and borg level), and then rotate in the other copies to synchronize them from the snapshot when the checks show all-good.

Soweit so gut, mein Setup #caddy und #vaultwarden als #rootless #podman Container als #systemd service läuft schon ein paar Tage stabil. Backups werden täglich durchgeführt und via #borgbackup in eine #Hetzner storage box gesichert.

@folkerschamel @birnim But total progress bars and ETA estimations are sometimes actively decided against. I think #borgBackup doesn't do it. Neither does :gitannex: #gitAnnex, though I don't know for what specific reasons.

borgmatic 1.8.0 has been released with no more section headers, improvements to running arbitrary Borg commands, and several (hopefully minor) breaking changes!

#BorgBackup is so nice ^c^

@searls for me Time Machine has always been very bad at backing up to network targets. Frequently got stuck, aborted or wanted to start over with a full backup every week. I now use #Vorta (#borgbackup frontend) and it's much faster and more robust. You don't get 1-click restore and some built-in apps are tricky to handle (i.e. better sync Keychain to iCloud etc.), but it's a trade-off worth making imho.

#borgbackup FTW. Sine i've been using a python env for my setup, i grabbed a backup from a time it was working and swapped the dirs out, and i'm back in business.

lessons learned backup more often and inspect your backups to validate you have what you expect in them. 😂
