Thinking about how this piece will sound after
1. I work on it a bunch
2. Someone works on the piano a bunch
Pretty great, will be how.

I don’t have this #weeklypiano quite where I want it, but that’s nothing new. What’s different is how much I still want to get it righter. A bit off schedule, though, and gotta take my chances when they come.

After nearly 6 music-hours (and 5 calendar-months), this 127th #pianominiature marks the end of my #dailypiano project.
My regular music-sharing will continue, if that's any consolation. In case it's not, here's Bortkiewicz's Consolation, Op. 17 #4:

Here’s a #Bortkiewicz Prelude (Op. 66 #3) I heard for the first time an hour ago. That’s been the very essence of #dailypiano. Also an ideal prelude to the next phase of this music-making project, which will look — and, with luck, sound — quite different.

To close the Op. 54 Marionetten, Bortkiewicz gives us Kasperl-Harlekin (or “Punch-Harlequin” in English, my sheets say, or “Guignol” en français). In this set, there’s a correlation — but I don’t think causation — between sounds-like-a-marionette and uses-whole-tone-scale.

The next-to-last of the #Bortkiewicz Op. 54 Marionetten is #8, Teddybär (“Teddy Bear”).
Final Marionette tomorrow, a couple more Bortkiewicz pieces over the weekend, and then on to the next phase of this project. #dailypiano #pianominiature #pianominiatures #classicalpiano #classicalmusic #pianomusic #romanticism #bortkevych #ukrainianmusic #ukrainiancomposer #ukrainiancomposers

I’m mildly musically offended by Bortkiewicz’s Marionetten Op. 54 #7, Der Chineser (~“The Chinese Man”), on two counts:
1. Whole-tone scales suggest many things, none of them Chinese
2. This one really evokes a marionette, which leaves me newly disappointed in the others; hmph

Bortkiewicz’s Op. 54 #6, Marquise, purportedly means “Marchioness”. That is not any sort of English — if indeed it is any at all — up with which I’ve previously had to put. The #pianominiature is scarcely longer than its title, though, and does make sense to my ears. #dailypiano #pianominiatures #piano #pianomusic #classicalmusic #classicalpiano #romanticism #bortkiewicz #bortkevych

For today’s #dailypiano #pianominiature, if I had more time, I would have played shorter notes. Lots more staccato called for (and notated). #Bortkiewicz Marionetten Op. 54 #4, Tirolerin (~“Tyrolean Lady”). #bortkevych #pianominiatures

The marionettes from Bortkiewicz’s Op. 54 are apparently each representing a nation and/or culture, so let’s expect some of the names to have aged poorly. For today’s #dailypiano #pianominiature, #3 is relatively okay: Spanierin (~“Spanish Lady”).

I know, I know, it’s already been a few #dailypiano weeks of #Bortkiewicz. But I keep finding lovely sets of #pianominiatures to get into. Let’s get into another: the Op. 54 Marionetten, starting with Russisches Bauernmädchen (“Russian Peasant Girl”). #pianomusic #bortkevych

We’ve heard Bortkiewicz’s setting of Andersen’s Child in the Grave. Now, to close Op. 39, we hear his Der Tod der Mutter (“Death of the Mother”) from Tolstoy’s Childhood. Listen for these earlier themes:
0:00 Natalia
0:48 Grischa
1:38 Maman
2:22 Grischa

More Op. 39 Kindheit #pianominiatures from #Bortkiewicz, this time #7: Natalia Sawischna, die Amme (“The Nurse”). Exact same length as yesterday’s #dailypiano, entirely different flavor. #pianominiature #pianomusic #piano #classicalpiano #classicalmusic #romanticism #bortkevych

The third #pianominiature from Kindheit (#Bortkiewicz, Op. 39, after Tolstoy’s novel) is Der Vater (“The Father”). Judging by the music, my family’s different. Maman (from a couple days ago) sounds more like me, and this one sounds more like B.

Bortkiewicz’s Op. 39 Kindheit suite was published in 1930, setting scenes, characters, and moods from Tolstoy’s 1852 novel of the same name. The suite — and perhaps the book, I have no idea — opens with “Karl Ivanovich, Der Lehrer” (“The Teacher”).

Full couple of days, but whew! I’ve once again avoided ever missing two #dailypiano in a row.
This sweet one, #2 of Bortkiewicz’s Op. 39 Kindheit (“Childhood”), is called “Maman” (“Mama”). The suite is based on the Tolstoy novel. We’ll hear more of it.

To celebrate 5 hours of #dailypiano, here's my favorite #Bortkevych by far — no #pianominiature even if well played, but rarely do we hear his strength and sweetness combine so organically.

Back in the land of properly tiny #pianominiatures, here’s the third of Bortkiewicz’s Op. 30 Aus Andersens Märchen (“From Andersen’s Fairy Tales”), Der standhafte Zinnsoldat (“The Steadfast Tin Soldier”).

In Bortkiewicz’s world, every Lamentation is followed by a Consolation, every minor key by the major. Would that it were so in ours. Here’s the Op. 17 Consolation corresponding to what happened here yesterday 😜
