Thinking about all those diverse attachments, and how you'd connect the data path to the main chassis. I'd go for 10gig Ethernet, because it's probably one of the cheapest and most well-known options. PCIe would be kinda bold. I guess you'd implement some kind of springy contacts - pads and pogo-pins. Ethernet implies a TCP/IP layer - which is quite robust, considering all the layers, re-transmission of packets, and stuff.
