In Utrecht University botanic gardens today. Hadn't been here for years, such a wonderful place, built on and around an old fort on the edge of the city.

I second-guessed myself while at the botanical garden, but looking it up now I had it right - Leucadendron. I think this one might be 'Little Bit'.

The understated light today made a perfect day for taking photos as it was plenty bright, but very diffuse.

There were few plant tags at the garden, so I don't know what this frilly beast is.

Agave parrasana x colorata in bloom at the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Concord, CA. (Bred by Brian Kimble, the garden's curator.)

Had a lovely masked outdoors meeting with Dr. Mary Williams, features editor of The Plant Cell.

Culture clash

Rather than the rigorous superintending of a typical , plants at Ventnor are allowed to grow naturally where they sow. this comparatively laissez-faire approach to the upkeep of the garden lies at the core of the controversy.

The largest I’ve spotted this summer… and what a beauty!

This is growing proudly in the - there was a load of interest in this with people gazing, photographing and discussing its size, colours and splendour.

It had plenty of activity too which was cool.

at its best.

🙏💖

Great to hunt for Butcher's-broom, Ruscus aculeatus, in the Botanic Garden today, a strange plant, 'leaves' are really cladodes, flattened stems, & plants generally dioecious, tiny ♂️ & ♀️ flowers on different plants. Cladodes on males always look narrower to me. Some plants with ♂️ flowers but with berries so maybe better word is 'subdioecious'! 🤯

The U.S. Botanic Garden offers a holiday exhibit that includes DC landmarks made from dried plant-based materials like pine cone scales, moss, bark, gourds, pods, willow sticks and even paper wasp nests. They are stunning mini-masterpieces! It was a most excellent visit. We were enchanted.
