are one of the most majestic and industrious insects on the planet.

I can watch them for hours. And often do in my travels around .

They’ve been active the last couple of months pollinating and feeding, naturally, given it has been the height of summer here in .

Below are some of my shots of busy doing their thing throughout my travels around this great city. Also some interesting facts about these gorgeous creatures!

Only female honey bees can sting, the males (drones) are not able to sting.

A typical active colony may have around 50,000 workers
Honey bees communicate through pheromones.

Honey bees fly up to 25 klm/h (15 mph) and beat their wings 200 times per second or 12,000 beats per minute!

Drones die after mating.

Foraging honey fly about 88,000 klm’s (55,000 miles) collectively, to produce a half a kilogram (approx 1 pound) of honey, visiting around 2 million flowers.

Each honey makes about 1 twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its entire life time 😳

A worker honeybees lifetime? Between 30 - 60 days.

Some warmth on the last January afternoon. Honesty seedheads in the sun, Rhododendron mucronulatum, Hamamelis mollis and a beautiful Erica.

I've been playing around with pseudo-solarisation which I learned about recently. It's remarkably easy to do with Lightroom. These are a couple of my favourites based on images taken at the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens Christmas lightship. , , ,

Saw this and bees were in abundance!

I watched this one for 5 minutes as it stayed with this flower

Most of the time it seemed to be picking up and placing down the flower’s filaments and anthers (the pieces laying on the bottom petal). Very active, flying

Other were flitting in, around and out again per usual

Super

The Salvia greggii, the ‘autumn sage’ is native to southwest Texas, through the Chihuahuan Desert and into the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí - a small thin strip of territory.

It typically grows in rocky soils and it blooms throughout summer and autumn. A generous period to display its beauty!

This generous patch of autumn sage is growing in the suburb of

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Kangaroo Paw so gorgeous as this!

It’s healthy. And it is healthy.

This is a prime example of home-grown talent, as this species of plant is found in abundance within Southwest Australia particularly.

Each plant may produce over 350 flowers, on up to 10 long stems. They normally appear during summer.

Just magnificent!

When they poured this driveway concrete, the overhanging dropped their leaves, imprinting themselves prior to drying…

And this display is now preserved for all time!

Just had to share this Wild Iris

Walking to the car after coffee, it was calling out from this unkempt front garden in , poking through the fence slats saying ‘look at me world’…

I looked… and I saw.

Now you have too!

This gorgeous plant is known as a pale yellow-eyed-grass… some may know it as a ‘satin flower’.

It reaches a height of 70–90 centimetres (28–35 in). This species is native to Argentina and Chile and it grows in alpine grasslands, open wooded areas and meadows.

… annnd it grows equally as well here in Oz!

Delicate and yet, to me, it embodies beauty and strength.

This is known as a ‘Silver Princess’

Located within the heart of a public space where many indigenous ceremonies are held, in

Its white / silver fruit () are the highlight, and yet many of its thin branches exhibit the same shimmer.

It really is delightful.

Im seeing ‘Spiny bear's breech’s’ everywhere at the moment.

It is native to southern Europe, from Italy to western Turkey. Grows well in these parts of however, and this one is flourishing

This was growing in a suburban garden that has been left derelict for over 5 years. Despite this, it appears healthy and happy!

, huh?

Went for a drive with a good friend and her front garden presented with such a beautiful aroma.

These were the source of said delightful smell! 👇

I present the Portland Rose…

Thinking of contacting to request a scratch ‘n smell function.

That’d add a new dimension to social media, hey? 😂😂

Your roses rock @Witchy_Minx !!

This little is so unassuming, beaming with pride in its early years in a shopping centre carpark

It’s ‘fruit’; the is plentiful, so too it’s new leaves that contain an abundance of eucalyptus oil

I had a little discussion with it. And it kinda went like this…

“Your new trunk is shedding last years cover, as your new bark peels away and falls on the ground to decompose over time. You are self sustaining, as it’ll replenish the nutrients for the soil, which is necessary to your future growth.

Your fruit is in great supply this year, which means you’re abundant in health and of giving to the universe in which you live

And the slender new leaves you’ve grown are testimony to your giving nature. The healing properties of the eucalyptus you produce is a virtuous substance to share with those you grace your presence with; us humans.

Over and above however, you are simply beautiful. You want for nothing, you stand proud in your grace.

I see you… and now others do too

Be well my new friend”.

For me, gums are the most appealing trees on the planet. No matter the locale, climate or recent weather conditions (drought or otherwise) the foliage always appears healthy and bountiful

I saw mature eucalypt gums throughout parklands in San Diego, Cali, some years back. Must have been planted decades ago. Looked out of place to be sure. But I recall they were as beautiful as ever.

Gums pictured: Werribee Park (Werribee South, Vic). Also Werribee River, overlooking open range zoo.
