Need some clueful to advise on this: it's a Valerian of some kind; but is it Marsh (V. dioica) or Common (V. officinalis)?

Note: I'm well north of reported range; but there's a garden nearby that used to belong to a florist...

Hey, and other people who know plants; does anyone know what this is? It’s sprouted everywhere in one of my fauna gardens, but I’m pretty sure critters planted it, and not I. Some of them are quite tall.

A few shots taken last week. I don't think I've seen a green fungus before. Or is it some kind of moss?

Calling all .

German botanist Karl Fuckel was born today on 3 Feb 1821. worked primarily on fungi. The grey-mold plant pathogen Botryotinia fuckeliana N.F. Buchw. was named for him. Yes, his author abbreviation really was what you think it was. In non-English-speaking countries anyway.

: can anyone recommend a good book for self-study of ? I have a colleague, a good field botanist, who would like to learn more about recognizing families, and taxonomic relationships at and above that level.

I have some good textbooks, but they're a little 'encyclopedic' in format, something more hands-on would be great if it exists?

Something like Agnes Chase' first book of grasses, but for plant families, would be fantastic!

Happy 521st Birthday to Leonhart Fuchs (1501-1566)! German, physician, botanist and author of the sumptuously illustrated herbal, De Historia Stirpium Commentarii Insignes (1542), Fuchs is considered one of the three founders of modern botany. The genus Fuchsia would later be named in his honor by Charles Plumier.
