Very few urban phenomena make me as happy as the survival of traditional crafts in old workshops.
Here’s an old-school luthier, still making bouzoukia by hand #Athens #music #luthier #bouzouki #exarcheia

In the original post I said photos of the #instrument would get here eventually, and so they have. Sorry for the delay. To recap a little.
This is a fusion of an #Irish #bouzouki and a Gypsy #jazz #guitar. Predominantly it follows the Gypsy jazz guitar grande bouche AKA D-hole design from the 30s, including curved front and back, ladder-bracing, and 674mm scale length, but with the 4-course setup and GDAD tuning of Irish Bouzouki. It was made in 2008 by Dutch #luthier Thijs van de Harst. I'm currently borrowing it to see if I may want to buy it (FYI definitely leaning that way, because this thing plays and sounds great). His website, where you can find images and sound samples of his mandolin-family instruments and Gypsy jazz guitars, is: https://www.thijsvanderharst.nl (in english).

Yesterday I got to repair this rather lovely tetrachordo #bouzouki. I'm not sure of its age, but I'm guessing 1970s.

I wasn't sure if that restriction applied everywhere, though it makes sense. I wouldn't have wanted anything a tortoise was still using.
It's actually for #bouzouki, not guitar, and my bouzouki super-hero, Markos Vamvakaris, said tortoiseshell gave the best sound.
I wonder if there's some new super material the folks still playing the old Rebetiko use....
This week I'm celebrating the one-of-a-kind Thierry "Titi" Robin, guitar, bouzouq, oud player extraordinaire from France, and his collaboration with Mehdi Nassouli, one of the great bearers of Moroccan musical traditions on voice and guembri. Both have already built a musical legacy on their own, but their collaboration crosses all borders in our minds. It's time to keep our ears wide open. #AlbumOfTheWeek #TitiRobin #MehdiNassouli #guitar #bouzouki #oud #guembri #maroc #france

So, after yesterday's trip and talk with the #luthier, currently sitting in my living room:
A fusion of an Irish #bouzouki with a Selmer-Maccaferri design D-hole (grande bouche) gypsy jazz #guitar. The #instrument varies in that it has a solid white cedar top, extra cutaway (making it a two-pointer), and a scale length of 674mm (26.54 inches). Well, and the Irish bouzouki setup with unison courses (in GDAD tuning). For the rest it's pretty much like the original 1930s design; down to ladder bracing and degree of curve in the front and back. And yes, the original laminated back and sides thing that created that distinctive gypsy jazz guitar sound; made famous by Django Reinhardt and his contemporaries.
The instrument is very resonant and dynamic, so the sound sample is me improvising something to showcase that. It was recorded in Logic with a Blue Snowball (cardioid condenser mic) and no editing whatsoever. 1/2
PS. photo coming eventually.

I was just playing some tunes on #Irish #bouzouki, and then… Ah-ha! #MusicTheory moment…
Irish #folk #music *had* a neutral 3rd. Yep, a note in between major and minor that most instruments cannot play anymore due to standardisation of intervalic relationships.
Because of this some tunes will switch between major and minor depending on what sounds best to the player.
I really like neutral 3rds though, but that only exists in the realm of #microtonal systems these days.

Lovely and unexpected. All three of the polkas, too.

This is my proper #introduction post.
In 1983 I bought a VIC-20 (with an audio tape drive!), started writing code in BASIC, typing in the programs from computer magazines, and trying to get them to run. Now, almost 40 years later, I work for a very large company, and write code in #Java, #Rust, #Python, #Ruby, #Bash, and several other languages. I’m also a musician, playing #bass, #guitar, #banjo, and, most recently, Irish #bouzouki (an instrument I’ve wanted to own for 35 years).

Some mighty playing here on flute and bouzouki on the Gradam Ceoil show in 2001. Eamonn De Barra and Brian Duke on flutes with Mick Broderick on bouzouki. #Irishtrad #bouzouki #flute
Here's a thread about the instrument that I now think of as my main instrument.
I originally built it in early 2003 so it is coming up to 20 years old.
It is a solid body #electricGuitar like instrument, but it originally had 5 courses (pairs) of strings tuned CGDAE (although DGDAD and DADAD also work well)
When I built it I would have called it a 10-string electric irish #bouzouki.
Here;'s what it looked like in 2003.
I'm kind of partial to tunes, but need to continue to share from the rich tradition of Irish songs and singers. Daori Farrell is one of the best and his weekly Sunday online concerts from his home during Covid helped keep our spirits up (check them out, still online). Here he is singing the classic Foggy Dew. #Irishtrad #bouzouki
Today's music to work to was inspired (and found) thanks to yesterday's posts about the John Dwyer set. It turns out there's a festival in his honor and here are some lovely recordings of tunes he wrote as well as a few he just enjoyed playing. The video was made during Covid so it is a bit spartan, but the music is lovely and pure drop. Some particularly tasty bouzouki backing as well as the lovely Edel Fox on concertina. #music2work2 #fiddle #concertina #bouzouki
