A reminder that delays in raising the debt limit are not without consequence. An analysis by the Government Accountability Office estimated that the 2011 debt-ceiling crisis increased government borrowing costs by $1.3 billion in 2011. An expanded analysis by the Bipartisan Policy Center estimated that it raised costs by $18.9 billion over the following ten years.
