Happy #fossilfriday . This is a pyrite fossil of a 400 million year old brachiopod from Ohio.
Purchased by my father at an art festival ~40 years ago, it hung in my office for 15 years until the pandemic. Every afternoon it would catch the sun.

Parasite-induced shell damage in brachiopod Porambonites (Porambonites) laticaudata from the Late #Ordovician (Sandbian) of #Estonia
https://doi.org/10.3176/earth.2023.23
The pits in the shell margin are most likely caused by the presence of symbionts which benefitted from inhalant currents and caused damage to the host #brachiopod. This is consistent with #parasitism rather than previously know damage linked with failed attacks by durophagous #predators.

Recently my Field Studies in #Geology class went to the Hausz Brothers Quarry in #Wisconsin to observe the #Pleistocene Lake Scuppernong sediments and #Ordovician bedrock strata of the #Platteville Formation. We collected #fossils while we were there, and this was my first time! Here are a few of the fossil #invertabrates that I collected from the Ordovician strata. This includes, from left to right, up to down: a #Crinoid, a #Cephalopod #nautiloid, a #Brachiopod and #Bryozoan, and a #Gastropod.

A boulder full of Brachiopod fossils - Brachiopods are a type of marine shellfish whose shells littered the ancient sea floor that covered this part of the planets surface between 320 million and 360 million years ago. Lahinch, County Clare, Ireland.

In a funny turn of events, someone thought the crinoid barge I recently posted was a speculative idea made up by me and not something actually known from the fossil record. I guess Sussocaris has made people extra cautious about what is and isn’t real.

In the Mesozoic there existed so-called crinoid barges, which were formed by sea lilies attaching themselves to the bottom of floating tree trunks. Some like Seirocrinus could grow up to 26 metres tall. Such barges do not exist anymore today, as the evolution of shipworms has vastly reduced the amount of driftwood in the oceans. #fossil #fossils #Mesozoic #jurassic #stippling #stipplingart #paleoart #paleontology #crinoid #crinoids #sealilies #ammonite #brachiopod #driftwood #invertebrates

A Brachiopod fossil eroding out of the Burren limestone - modern relatives of these now extinct shellfish still live/die and deposit their shells on our ocean floors today.
