"Do you think that the Earth loves you back?" Robin Wall Kimmerer asks this question in her 2013 book, BRAIDING SWEETGRASS.

I paused in my re-read and thought about her question. From a scientific perspective, this might seem like a ridiculous, or pointless, question. But consider the third law of motion, and from there ponder whether there could also be a third law of emotion?...

Just finished reading by Robin Wall Kimerer: she's a scientist with Native American ethnicity.

I feel it should be mandatory reading for every politician. For many of us it seems that our politicians are refusing to face up to the reality that we have thrown ourselves off the cliff. The right is just plain evil now. The left will kill us with pragmatism,

It is not realistic - hundreds of millions are going to die horrible deaths - but maybe we could mitigate a little?

Was staying at a friend’s house while they were gone a few weeks ago, and realized how some of the Honorable Harvest (ethical foraging) guidelines aren’t weird or surprising… they’re the same guidelines I use when deciding what to eat when a friend has said “Take whatever you want”:

-Never take the first, never take the last
-Take only what you need
-Never take more than half, leave some for others
-Use it respectfully

The source of all this is I'd like to make a craft to depict the rules of the honorable harvest, as expressed in Robin Wall Kimmerer's .

I can't carve this many letters, it seems wrong to woodburn, and I don't want to cross-stitch it... So! Calligraphy and linocut.

Related to this is a quote from by : "The problem with these new people is that they don't have both feet on the shore. One is still on the boat. They don't seem to know whether they're staying or not."

These two quotes are on my mind for myself in this coming year. While I am forced to live within a capitalist society, I want to learn to live WITH the land on which I reside. Robin asks" What happens when we truly become native to a place, when we finally make a home? Where are the stories that lead the way? If time does in fact eddy back on itself, maybe the journey of the First Man [Nanabozho] will provide footsteps to guide the journey of the Second."

@bsmall2 I may be duplicating posts but the book about moss is so wonderful I will take that risk. is a great book but my favorite by is partly because it speaks about and old stable ecosystems in general. Currently trying to save 3,500 acres of in the project that has lots of moss but not a lot of sweetgrass :)

Finishing up audiobook and listening to the Bryology episode of and Robin Wall Kimmerer is so soothing and insightful. Highly recommended if you have any interest in plants or want to expand your knowledge about reciprocation and gratitude within the natural world.

Bedtime listening - Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I've heard many good things about this book but am only now getting round to reading it.

I (just finished) . Can't recommend highly enough.

One of many interesting ideas:

You can imagine conservation and sustainability as trying to minimize your interference with nature--but perhaps more effective is to build a relationship with nature--a reciprocal relationship is more likely to last than a one sided one.

This book, waoh. I'm still amazed by the beauty it showed me. I never knew you could have such an intense connection to plants. Changed my view completly and I'll have to do some thinking. Can fully recommed it.
